Integrating Japanese Eastern medicine with Western medicine.

Pelvic-related issues are frequently encountered during pregnancy and childbirth. In fact, over 80% of mothers experience some form of pelvic problem. However, many of them are often told that the issues will resolve on their own, or they endure them while juggling childcare responsibilities. Some may even resign themselves to the belief that postpartum recovery of their body shape and function is not possible.

PRI Pelvis Model

Common symptoms that occur include:

  1. Urinary incontinence (leakage of urine)
  2. Diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles, resulting in a gap between the left and right sides)
  3. Lower back pain, sciatica, hip pain
  4. Pelvic organ prolapse (descent of the uterus, bladder, or intestines)

Pelvic misalignment, instability, and swollen feet are also frequent issues during pregnancy. The impact of the pelvis can be considered as a contributing factor to the failure of postpartum body shape restoration. For example, if the pelvis remains widened and fails to return to its original position, it hampers the effective utilization of pelvic floor muscles and core muscles. As a result, even if the weight returns to pre-pregnancy levels, the abdominal area may still appear protruded and contribute to difficulties in maintaining the desired postpartum body shape. Furthermore, although less well-known, pelvic problems can also lead to neck pain, shoulder stiffness, headaches, and tendonitis.

In the United States, there is a specialized field of physical therapy called Women’s Health, which focuses on pregnancy and postpartum rehabilitation. There are specialized therapists who cater to the needs of women during and after pregnancy. FuncPhysio is one of the few clinics in the United States where these specialized therapists work. In our clinic, we customize programs tailored to the unique physiological changes of women before and after childbirth, as well as the demands of childcare, aiming to improve and address the problems associated with pregnancy and childbirth.
